関心領域 Zone of Interest

うっかりAmazonの術中にはまり、知らないうちにプライム会員になっていました。それをいいことに、評判の映画や、もう一度観たいと思っていた映画を楽しんでいます。その中で断トツだったのが「関心領域」。アウシュビッツ強制収容所の隣で暮らす所長のルドルフ・ヘス一家のお話です。

ドラマチックな会話も、盛り上げる音楽も無し。定点カメラを通して観るのは家族の日常。

収容所と邸宅の間には高い塀があり、ヘス家の住人には塀の向こうで何が起こっているか見えません。広い敷地に美しい花を植えることに夢中の妻、ヘートヴィヒは「ここはやっと手に入れた理想の場所だから絶対に引っ越さない」と主張します。

遺体を焼く焼却炉の稼働音、パンパンという乾いた銃声、助けを乞う叫び声。子供を遊ばせていた川の上流から流れてくる遺骨。所々に仕込まれる違和感が奇妙な不快感を呼び起こします。残虐なシーンがないので「平和な生活」に見えてしまう異常さが、家族に、そして観客にも静かに影響を及ぼしていきます。

毎日大量殺戮が行われる場所、一家が平和に暮らす家、ふたつの建物は地下道で繋がっていました。ルドルフはこの秘密の地下道を通って殺人と不貞の現場から家庭へ戻り、幼い我が子を寝かしつける父になります。常に冷静に見える彼ですが、少しずつ心身に不調を感じ始めていました。これは、いとも簡単に一線を越えられるという恐怖とも、人は全くの悪にもなりきれないという小さな希望とも受け取ることができます。

アウシュビッツで大量虐殺があったのは戦争中だったから、変な思想が蔓延していたから、人々が洗脳されたから。今は違う。私たちはそんな間違いを起こさない。私たちはスクリーンのこちら側にいる平和主義者だから。

本当にそうでしょうか？もし自分がヘス家の住人だったら、塀の向こうに行って「こんなことは間違っている」と大声で叫ぶでしょうか。彼らと私達との間に塀はあるのでしょうか。様々な言い訳をしながら善と悪の間を彷徨うのが人間なのでは、と感じました。

ネタばれになるので詳しくは書けませんが、問題提起レベルは最高値でした。「二度と観たくないほど気持ち悪い」と言う人もいるので注意してくださいね。

アカデミー国際長編映画賞・音響効果賞受賞。ユニークな撮影方法もよかったです。ザンドラ・ヒュラーは歩き方でヘートヴィヒの生まれ育ちを表現するすごい女優さんです。（落下の解剖学にも出演）

This film is about the family of Rudolf Hess, the camp commander living next to the Auschwitz concentration camp.  Fixed cameras inside and outside the house quietly capture the family's daily life.

A high wall separates the house from the camp, so the family cannot see what's happening on the other side.  His wife, Hedwig is obsessed with her beautiful and spacious garden, insisting she will never leave the dream home she has finally got.

The sounds of bodies being burned, dry gunshots, cries for help, and bones floating down the river where their children play--there are no senes of violence, but these small discomforts here and there gradually and quietly affect both the family and the audience.

This all happened because of the war, the spread of false ideologies, and people being brainwashed.  It's different now.  We believe we wouldn't make the same mistakes.  

But is that really true？

If you were a member of the Hess family, would you have gone to the camp and shouted, "This is wrong"?  Is there anything clearly separates you from them?

The house and the camp are connected by a secret tunnel. Rudolf makes plans to kill and burn more people more efficiently, has an affair, and then returns home through the tunnel to tuck his children into bed as a father.  He always appears calm and unbothered, but his health gradually deteriorates.  I think it implies that we humans can easily cross the line, and that we cannot remain wrong forever without consequences--we all move back and forth between good and evil anyway.

Some people say they never want to watch this film again, but for me, this film is full of issues to raise.
